Africa Wiki Women
Africa Wiki Women is a pan-African movement advancing gender equity in open knowledge, founded in 2023 to close the gender gap in knowledge creation and amplify the voices of African women across digital and open knowledge spaces. We empower women with the tools, skills, resources, and mentorship they need to create, share, and lead in shaping knowledge about Africa.
Our community brings together passionate women committed to documenting and celebrating African cultures, stories, and lived experiences. Through training, mentorship, campaigns, and collaborative programs, we create opportunities for women to learn, connect, and contribute meaningfully across platforms.

What We Do
A peer network connecting African women Wikimedians across countries for ongoing support, collaboration, and shared learning.
Why This Matters
Global internet platforms are still shaped disproportionately by Western, male perspectives, even though a majority of internet users now come from the Global South, and nearly half are women. On Wikipedia specifically, African women remain scarce both as editors and as subjects, which limits whose history gets preserved, discovered, and trusted. Africa Wiki Women exists to close that gap from both directions: more African women contributing, and more African women’s stories being told.
